Independent Bookstores

I love to read; I have always been a reader, and I have always loved books. I haven’t made the switch to an e-reader yet. I love BOOKS. I love the way they smell and feel. I love the weight of them in my hands, and the sound of the pages turning. I love the texture of the paper. I love books. I suppose it’s only natural that my love of books leads to a love of bookstores. I love most bookstores, but I have recently come to truly love independent bookstores.

Independent bookstores support the local community, your community. When you shop your local indie bookstore (you can use this link to find one near you) you are helping to employ people in your community. They also host great events, oftentimes featuring local authors. It’s so nice to meet someone who lives and writes near you.

Indie bookstores also offer some wonderful and unique book clubs. I’m in a cook book club through the local indie store; we meet once a month, and I find myself looking forward to it all month. Not only are the book clubs themselves enjoyable, but you get the opportunity to meet and befriend people who live and work near you. That’s as good as finding a wonderful new book.

  1. I love books too and I violently opposed e-readers. Then my parents got me one for Christmas this year, bless their hearts. I almost threw it into the fireplace. Since then I've read some books on it, but I can't get behind it. It is good for magazines and Angry Birds though.

I love independent book stores, sadly there's very few left in my area.

  3. I love reading and the feel of a solid book but imagine living on an island with only 2 good bookstores that cater mainly to students. My kindle saved my sanity but I still prowl through the bookstores now and again ;)

  4. Indie bookstores are the best. I hope Amazon doesn't kill them all!

  5. We love our independent book store here in Raleigh, Quail Ridge Books! Just purchased $500 worth of books today from there for my middle school. Fabulous folks to work with, great book programs!

  6. Though I am mostly reading on my iPad, I love to browse a real bookstore. I am stopping by from the A-Z challenge.

  7. I love love LOVE independent book stores. I wish I owned one actually. That would be seriously amazing, and then I could read all day at work.
Great post and happy A-Z blogging!

  8. Hi! Popping in from the A-Z. It would be terrible if all the independent book stores disappeared because I too love p-books and I always will. But, since I don't live in an English-speaking country, I have to have an e-reader. Feeding my addiction (reading) would be impossible without it, I'm afraid :-(

  9. I moved to Wales when I was ten, threw myself into books and found a home in the local bookshop. It was still there when I returned to Wales after nine years away, it was still the same, and such a comfort. I hope it's there forever.

  10. i love and miss having indie bookstores. when i lived in the bay area, i would always go into them. now that i'm in a much smaller town (where the values lie elsewhere!) it's more difficult. i don't do e-readers either. :)
