Sausage Gravy

This is actually my grandmother's recipe for sausage gravy and biscuits.  It is so good!  She has made it, without exact measurements, for as long as I can remember.  She's no longer able to cook due to mobility issues, but I made it with her several times before, and these are the measurements I came up with.  It's one of my favorite breakfasts and is the one any friends who come to stay always request.  I've never been able to master homemade biscuits, so I just use the Grand's biscuits.

1 pound ground sausage
4 – 6 Tbsp flour
4 cups milk
Dash of nutmeg
¼ tsp pepper
Brown sausage with nutmeg over medium heat.  When sausage is fully cooked add milk and 4 Tbsp flour, whisk thoroughly.  Add pepper and simmer over medium heat until gravy reaches desired thickness.  Add additional flour (up to 2 more Tbsp) if necessary to thicken gravy.  Serve warm over biscuits.

  2. Sounds so good! We had the best biscuits ever when we were in Florida on our honeymoon at a B&B. The owner/cook said the secret was to use 3 leavening agents - baking soda, baking powder and buttermilk. Unfortunately that is all he told me...

  4. Now that seems like a real southern treat. I'm from up north so I've never tried sausage and biscuits, but it does look good! My hubby's from southern Indiana, which has a lot of southern-ish dishes, so I'm sure he's tried it. I'm over from A to Z saying hi, so pop on by if you like! (Catherine Stine's Idea City)

    1. You should try it! My husband's boss is from Maine, and he finally convinced her to try them a few months ago, and she really liked them.

  5. My dad LOVES sausage gravy. There's a small restaurant here in town that makes it and he goes every week. He's 89, so it seems to be a recipe from that generation. Good to find you here...I'm popping in from the A-Z challenge. Are you having fun w/ it? Visit me at my Ballpark by clicking on my name.

    1. It does seem like a very old dish, but sometimes those are the best.

  6. I had this for breakfast this very morning. I don't use the nutmeg but may try it later this week. Um, fresh biscuits are fantastic! Oh, and I add jalapenos to mine to spice it up.

    1. My grandmother picked up using the nutmeg when my grandfather was stationed in Germany. She said they used a little nutmeg in almost all of the pork and beef dishes. It doesn't take much at all, but it definitely adds to the flavor. I've never added jalapenos, but I may have to try that. I've used the hot sausage before and liked that, so I bet the jalapenos are really good too.
