Happy New Year!

Okay, so we’re three days into the new year, but I really think it’s acceptable to wish people a happy new year during the first week or so of the new year.

As usual, I let blogging go during December.  I meant to post some cute Christmas ideas and some more recipes, but time just got away from me.  Like it does every December.  So this post is going to be combination of a December/2017 wrap up and a new year post.  Do lengthy posts make up for not posting often?

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and a very Merry Christmas.  We enjoyed every minute of our holidays.  It was wonderful for Nick to be off for the holidays, and not to be on call, or too tired from working nights.  We went to my sister’s house for Christmas, along with Nick’s mom and step-dad, and our friend Alex.  We spent three nights there, and had a very laid back holiday of eating too much, opening lots of presents, and watching movies.  Everyone had a good time, and I think everyone was very happy with their gifts.

On the baking front, it felt almost like I was running a bakery during the last week or so before Christmas.   We had a big snow early in December, and lost power at our house for most of the weekend, which really put my baking schedule behind.  I prefer to deliver everyone’s Christmas desserts before the week of Christmas when people tend to be inundated with Christmas goodies, but it just didn’t happen this year.  I did get them all made and delivered before Christmas, so I’m calling it mostly a win.

I never remember to keep track of how much I bake, but between various departments at work, friends, various offices (chiropractor, etc.), I know there were a lot of desserts made.  The Monday before Christmas started off with me loading four cherry crunches into the car to take to various people at work. I enjoy it, though, and people seem to be happy whenever you show up with a dessert for them.

The Christmas tree has survived Caroline’s attention fairly well.  Most of the really breakable ornaments are clustered around the top of the tree, but the tree and ornaments have survived Caroline’s first Christmas mostly unscathed.  The tree is still up.  Nick grew up with the tradition of leaving it up until after January 6th.  I never had a Christmas tree growing up, so am more than happy to go along with the traditions he’s used to, especially if that means we get to enjoy the tree a little longer.  We plan to take it down this weekend, so it only has to survive Caroline’s attentions for a few more days before it’s stowed safely in the closet.

We spent New Year’s Eve ay home.  We’ve just never wanted to go out for it.  It turned out to be a very good decision because the roads here were really icy on New Year’s Eve.  Lots of people around here rang in the new year from the interstate.  A few people from work were among the people who did that, and it didn’t sound like fun.  I think we’ll stick with spending that particular holiday at home, in our pajamas.  It’s definitely more fun than sitting in traffic for hours.

I don’t even want to talk about how cold it has been for the past few days.  I know it’s a lot colder for a lot of people, but we’re not even getting above freezing most days.  We’ve been dropping down to single digit temperatures some nights, which just seems wrong.  Temperatures need to be double digit!  There is some talk of snow for us next week.  Nothing definitive yet, so I’m hoping that it won’t happen.   I am not a fan of snow.  I’m ready for spring and warm weather.

So what about you?  How were your holidays?  How is 2018 starting off for you?  Are you freezing too?

  1. Happy New Year.

I'm not going to talk about our weather. If you saw the Rose Parade on Monday, you have an idea of what it's looked like here ;)

Glad you had a good holiday. Now on to January...

  2. Happy New Year, Danielle! I was so pleased to see your nice comments the other day! And I feel for your cold. It's probably colder here and I wish I had your weather but it's all relative -- if you aren't used to it, it's worse!

Your Christmas sounds great. So does cherry crunch, whatever that is! Yum! I'm impressed with your baking. I do a lot of food gifts too and I love it but you're right about early v. late. Sometimes it just happens.

I'm a late-tree-taker-downer too. I just hate to see it go and two of my trees are "winter" so I can leave them up. But the big one will go down this weekend, like yours and I'll be sad to see it go.

Take care out there -- I know the roads where you are can get dicey and you don't have the infrastructure to handle it as well as in the north. Don't take chances! And no, never too late for Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you, too!

  3. Happy New Year.

I too am ready for spring but winter has only recently settled in so no such luck here.

A huge winter storm is forecast for us today. We are ready but you never know what will happen with such high winds.

Christmas saw many changes for our family this year so the best I can say is that we got through it. We took our tree down on the 2nd.

    On with the storm...

  4. Happy new year! I agree that it's fine for the first week of January.

I'm glad you enjoyed your Christmas, even if you ended up feeling like you were running a bakery at one point. I'm certain those who got deserts from you appreciated it... I know I would have! Good to hear the tree survived Caroline's attentions... Hope it can do so for a few more days. ;)

It's been in the single digits most of the time since November here, and sometimes dropped below freezing. I like colder weather more though, and it meant I got snow twice - even if both times didn't give me much - so I'm not complaining.

  5. Gosh - I'm feeling spoiled with the weather out here in Denver. We did get about a week of cold - basically from Christmas through New Year's, but otherwise it hasn't really felt like winter at all. We're now back into the warm dry pattern of highs in the high 40's or low 50's without a snowflake in sight. Seriously, I think we've only had about 6 inches all season, and that number should be well over 2 feet by now.

Anyhow, I've been reading about how this crazy weather pattern (cold/wet in the east and warm/dry in the west) is being caused by warming in the Arctic. I fear some of it is over my head, but I think what it boils down to is that the jet stream is messed up, and it's causing cold air that should stay up in the arctic to dip down into the mid-latitudes - plus it's causing the weather patterns to get stuck and hang around much longer than they should.

I'm not exactly complaining about the warm weather, but I don't think it bodes well for the future - for us it means drought and fires, and for you folks in the eastern half of the country it means crazy cold. Sigh.

  6. We are quite hot all day and there is often a big storm in the afternoon and everything cools down. You sound absolutely freezing. I don't know what a cherry crunch is but I'm guessing it's delicious. What a lovely person you are to bake all those treats. I'm glad you had a lovely Christmas. You deserve it. Happy new year to you x

  7. It certainly sounds as though you guys had a great Christmas holiday, Danielle. Happy New Year! And yes, stay warm ... it's just brutally cold here. The high is supposed to be 9 today, with wind chills of about -20. I will be excited when spring arrives. :)
