Another Scorcher

This weekend was another scorcher here, with temperatures near 100 degrees.  It seems that it was unbearably hot in quite a few places though.  Once again the air conditioner just wasn’t able to keep up, so it stayed around 79 degrees in the house for most of the weekend.  The humidity was up as well, which seems to be what makes it truly horrible.  Even the dehumidifier wasn’t able to keep up.

It seems a little unfair that the weekends seem to be the scorchers, with temperatures dropping back down to bearable levels during the week, only to increase to miserable levels again by the weekend.  At least that seems to have been the pattern for the past couple of weeks here.  It feels a bit like being cheated on the weekend.  I’m not sure how it is for most of you, but the air conditioning at work seems to do a much better job of keeping up with the higher temperatures than the air conditioning at home.  I guess I should just be thankful that I work in an air conditioned building.

Because it was so hot we spent most of the weekend watching movies, we just didn’t have the energy for much else in the heat.  We watched Big Miracle, which was great (I’m a huge Drew Barrymore fan), though it did make my husband start talking (again) about wanting to move to Alaska.  If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely worth checking out, just make sure your significant other knows if you aren’t willing to relocate to Alaska.

Here’s another summer crock-pot recipe as well.  It’s very tasty, and doesn’t heat the house up to make.  You can change it up some by using different dressings and wraps if you want something a little different.

Italian Turkey Wraps

1 split turkey breast (also works with a whole turkey breast, just double your seasoning and water)

1 package of Italian Dressing Mix

1 ½ cups water

Whole Wheat Tortillas

Shredded Romaine Lettuce

Chopped Bell Pepper

Chopped Red Onion

Italian Dressing

Place  turkey in slow cooker and sprinkle with dressing mix, pour in water, cover and cook on Low for 4 – 5 hours.

Remove turkey from slow cooker, and shred with a fork.

Place turkey, lettuce, onion, and bell pepper in tortillas, and drizzle lightly with Italian salad dressing.  Enjoy!

The good news is that it’s beginning to cool down some today, and we’re expecting temperatures in the high 70s during the middle of the week.  I can’t wait!  We’re expected to have thunderstorms for most of the next week, but at the moment that seems like a small price to pay for more reasonable temperatures.

So what about you?  Is there any relief in sight or are you due for another scorcher?  I hope you’re keeping cool.

  1. Our temps were supposed to go down for the next few days, but since it's almost 100 right now, I'm assuming that weather man is a big liar. Oh well, I plan to keep cool by staying inside and trying to be productive or going outside to swim. Now I know why we waited five years to find the perfect house with a pool. I am so grateful for that thing.

The wrap looks delightful and reminds me of how much I miss tortillas!

    1. Our cool down actually seems to be happening as promised. I didn't think I was going to melt between the office and the car, so I'm impressed.

That's great that you have a pool to keep cool in.

The wrap really is good. I can't imagine giving up tortillas. You're a lot tougher than I am.

    2. On the vitamins, do you just take the potassium in the summer because you lose a lot because of the sweat, or does it do something to help the sweat? I'm a sweater (not that you wear) and would love a vitamin solution, but I bet you take it because you lose so much. My dietician told me potassium helps with leg cramps too (or too little can be the cause of cramps) so I may start taking that anyway.

    3. It doesn't help with the sweating, though I REALLY wish it did. It's just to help replenish everything I lose from sweating so much. Do you sweat crazy amounts? I do! My dad does too, so I guess I get it from him. My doctor told me magnesium (or lack of, I guess) is just as likely a culprit for leg cramps, so that's why I take that one too. Lately I've been doubling up on both of them, since it has been so hot and the sweating has been so much worse.

  2. It was hot here too. We tried hanging out in the house in the AC on Sunday, but my 3 year old was going stir crazy so we went outside to play. In about 15 minutes his face was red from being so hot, poor kid!

    1. That's pitiful! I can't imagine wanting/trying to play outside in this heat. I hope it cools down for him soon.

  3. cool here.....but we are supposed to heat up a bit this week (middle 80s). I like that recipe for the crockpot; another good one to try! Sometimes in the heat the best thing to do is what you guys did, relax and just watch movies. I remember there were weekends at times when it would rain and then be sunny when the kids were in school during the week; that was hard as you wanted them to be able to play outside and it was raining, so I understand your concept of hot weekend/cooling down weeks. Glad to hear there is relief in sight for your current excessive heat!

    1. I hope it doesn't get too hot for you there. It's just so disappointing when the weather is bad in some way on the weekend and then gets so much better during the week.

We love the turkey wraps, and they're so easy, it doesn't even seem like making dinner.

    1. We haven't received much of the promised rain, but it has cooled down quite a bit, so it's very nice right now.

  6. Hi Danielle,
The weather you describe it but a distant memory to us living in Britain. I vaguely recall that glowing orb in the sky, way back in March.
Although I know how unbearably hot it has been in some places, a bit of warmth and the end to this incessant rain, would be most welcomed. Perhaps we can work out some sort of weather trade :)
I'm liking your turkey recipe. I hope your weather stays somewhat cooler for you. As for me, must go for a canoe ride in my English garden...
    Happy blogging and stay cool,
    Gary :)

    1. I hope it has warmed and dried up some for you. We seem to be getting all of the rain now. It has definitely cooled things off, though it's starting to feel like we're permanently soggy. A weather trade sounds good!

The turkey recipe is super easy and really good.
