This post could probably just as easily be labeled “An Excuse to Share More Pictures of Howard.” But, for purposes of the A to Z Challenge, “Terbutaline” it is.
Terbutaline is the medication that Howard is on for his asthma. Web Md describes it as “used to treat wheezing and shortness of breath from lung problems (such as asthma.”
Yes, cats can develop asthma. They cough and wheeze. Not treating it can lead to a buildup of scar tissue in their lungs.
When Howard was first diagnosed with asthma, we tried putting him on an inhaler. He’s such an easygoing cat that we all thought it would work. Unfortunately, Howard wanted no part of the inhaler. Even Howard has some limits as to what he’ll put up with.
Fortunately, our vet was able to switch him to Terbutaline, which is a tablet. Howard takes one-quarter of a tablet twice daily and is very excited to take them. We put them in Pill Pockets, which Howard loves. He comes into the kitchen and does his little meerkat pose waiting for his special treat whenever we get the medication and Pill Pockets out.
Our vet told us it’s cheaper to get the Terbutaline filled at a regular pharmacy, so that’s what we’ve been doing. The price has fluctuated quite a bit lately, so we’ve been using different pharmacies to get the best prices. Some of them have some interesting labeling. Some of my favorites are:
Howard Feline Zecher
Howard the Feline Zecher
Howard Zecher (Canine)***
***Nope, he’s definitely a cat. An unusual cat, but most definitely a cat.
Do any of your pets have prescriptions filled at a regular pharmacy?
Aww poor Howard....glad that he is taking medicine...i love that meerkat pose..am not a pet person but i know the pet love. My inlaws have three cats..two dogs and plenty of birds...my father in law literally lives only with them and not humans..:)
ReplyDeleteGood day
Dropping by from a to z "The Pensive"
That's great that Howard's asthma can be treated, and that he's good about taking his meds. Our Angel Moosey had chronic sius issues, and used to get a drop od Flonase in each nostril every night. That was before it was OTC, and the pharmacists often asked about how Moosey was doing when we would pick up his prescription. :)
ReplyDeleteI love his meerkat pose :) Glad he is so willing to take it! I did not know cats could get asthma. I could see it might be hard to administer an inhaler to one. I love his names on the prescription too.
ReplyDeleteWe got Koda's insulin from a regular pharmacy, Wal-Mart to be exact. In fact it was cheaper to get it from there than any other pharmacy and if I remember correctly it didn't need a prescription. That and the syringes we used to give him the shots.
betty
I hope your Howard continues to enjoy taking his medication, that's a good trick! My dog had to take heart tablets, I aways put them in a little ball of liver sausage, which she loved. Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteOh I totally love that babe sitting up like that. That is awesome. I need to teach Misty, while she is young to do some tricks cause I read Russian Blues are easy to teach tricks too. You visit my blog off and on but I am not sure you ever have seen the FURS blog. Here is the link...https://www.blogger.com/blog/post/edit/1276547385680284997/2647958194654353846
ReplyDeleteI didn’t know you could get pet meds at a regular pharmacy! Would GoodRX work? I also didn’t know cats could get asthma. Can they also be allergic to themselves?
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine using an inhaler on a cat. I know none of mine would go for that. I'm glad you found something that works. When Bella was diabetic, I got her insulin at a regular pharmacy too. Talk about expensive! But she is still here so it was all worth it.
ReplyDeleteWe are glad that pharmacies do pet meds cuz it saves us money. Our dog perches himself on furniture like a cat.
ReplyDeleteAnimals are so querky and fun
Turned Back
Well, if it's the same meds... Glad you found something that'll help Howard. I'm sure it's not fun for him to have the asthma.
ReplyDeleteI knew cats could get asthma, and wondered what they'd do if you couldn't get them to use the inhaler. Now I know. Oh, and those labels are amusing. Lilie gets her stuff through the vet, and she's the only one of my petkids on regular medication.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad there are good medications that will help pets as they do people.
