Pet Food Recall

I just read about this pet food recall thanks to the lovely blog Fetch Me My Fainting Couch, so I’m passing the information on to fellow fur parents.

This is so disappointing.  Emma is a boxer mix, so we’ve been feeding her the Eukanuba Boxer food for a while now.  It looks like a trip to PetSmart for different food is on this evening’s agenda now.

What are your thoughts on a pet food recall?  I’ve typically adhered to a one strike and you’re out policy.  The fur kids are our babies and I just can’t justify taking chances with their wellbeing.  We’ve promised to take care of them to the best of our ability.  That being said, it’s becoming harder and harder to find a brand that hasn’t had some problems.  I’d love to hear what any of you feed your fur kids.

  1. I read your comment on the Fainting Couch blog and now found yours-- another pet lover! Regardless of vets saying not to feed people food to dogs, it's more because most of us are not knowledgeable enough to prepare it properly. In the "old days" my grandmother cooked for her family and put an extra plate of whatever they had down for the dog. Dog kibble chow was invented for convenience, but not all brands are equal--at all. You have to do your homework on this. We feed Blue Buffalo dry food, but can't afford to also give some of that company's wet food with it, so we add a little piece of whatever protein we had for dinner to make it more palatable. Thanks for commenting on this topic. I guess I can assume (most) book lovers = pet lovers :)

    1. I think that's a pretty safe assumption about book lovers and pet lovers.

I do sometimes give the fur kids some boiled chicken with their dry food, and they always get a little turkey at Thanksgiving. It seems like a nice treat and I think the extra protein might be good.

I've heard a lot of good things about Blue Buffalo.

  2. It's appalling how often there seems to be problems with pet foods. Of course, if there is something wrong with the food, there SHOULD be a recall. But why not have better QC protocols and standards in the first place? I think there would be far fewer problems...

    1. You would think that after sooo many recalls they'd figure out some better way of managing things. Wouldn't that be nice?!?

  3. Off topic Danielle, sorry but couldn't find a way to email you:
I see that you have tried flash fiction in the past. I am going to try my hand at it as a frustrated wannabe-writer who probably has passed the time in life when I will.

If you are interested, I made a new blog just for my convenience to do it (but anyone's invited) http://flashmoonwriting.blogspot.com

Or if you can recommend a page that is current and you have used. Thanks a million and good luck with your writing, Rita

    1. Thanks! I will definitely check that out! Sorry for the late response, things just got a little crazy around here.

Delores, at The Feathered Nest, usually has some kind of weekly writing prompt. That's where the photo prompts I used came from. I haven't checked hers out in a while, but you may like whatever she has going on.

  4. I am glad for the recalls and will usually just move on and find something comparable. I'm like you, I wouldn't feed my children questionable food, or food that was once deemed dangerous for consumption. Same goes for my pets!

    1. I'm very glad the dangerous food gets recalled. I just wish the pet food companies would get it right. I can't see feeding the fur kids questionable food.

  5. I've never thought much about pet food, to be honest. Our dog, Socks, loved IAMS, so that is what he gets. My brother in law is so attached to his dog that he allows it to sit in his lap at the dinner table and feeds him scraps off his plate. He thinks it is a good trick to put a piece of meat in his mouth, let it hang out and have the dog eat it. Almost takes away your appetite. He feeds his dogs braunschweiger. One of them has just been diagnosed with diabetes. I think that no child or animal should EVER have type 2 diabetes. We, as the adults, the ones who control what they eat, should never put them in that situation.

    1. A lot of the pet foods have had some pretty scary recalls. I can't imagine doing that at the table with the pets. We love our fur kids, but there are some limits!

You're right about the need to be responsible when you're supposed to be the adult in charge of things.
