Pain, Lots and Lots of Pain

What a pleasant topic, huh?  Well, sorry folks, it seems to be the only thing I can think about right now.  I’m having a very bad time with my back at the moment.   I pretty much lost the genetic lottery when it came to back and neck stuff (thanks Dad) and it wasn’t helped by a very nasty tumble down the stairs as a child, or a car accident in my early 20s.

I periodically have episodes in which my back refuses to cooperate and the pain becomes unbearable and unbearably distracting.  This is one of those times.  All of the muscles from my neck to my hips seem to be in a competition to see which one can form the tightest knot, and they’re all tied for first place.  Pain is very much on my mind at the moment.

So, I thought I’d ask about the most physically painful things you’ve endured.  I know it’s a weird (slightly sick and twisted?) topic, but like I said, it’s really on my mind right now.  For me, the most painful things I’ve experienced have mostly been back and neck problems.  I’ve had three episodes that rate as much worse than this current one.  I’ve also had one really bad burn. Touching the heating element in your oven is NOT a good way to find out if it’s working.  Trust me on that one.  Rounding out the list would be gall stones.  Your gall bladder ceasing to work and filling up with stones feels very much like I would imagine being stabbed would.  The pain is so intense, you can’t breathe or think, and it cuts right through you.  You just want it to stop.

What about you?  What are the most physically painful things that have happened to you?

  1. Poor you! It sounds like you've had a lot of pain. Natural childbirth didn't feel so good for me, and stepping on a needle and ramming into a nail weren't fun either!

  2. Most physically painful? Falling down two flights of marble steps at work ... and ... my last gout attack. We won't even mention childbirth....I signed up for that one.

  3. So sorry about your back. My dad has dealt with back pain, and I know it's not fun. *gentle hugs*

Natural childbirth--that was definitely the worst pain I've endured, followed by the ear infection I had a few months ago. It was my first one ever, and I couldn't believe the pain!

  4. Labor pains...3 times. Giving birth (naturally) wasn't nearly as bad as the contractions leading up to it.

I hope your back feels better soon.

  5. Yep, labor pains are pretty intense. The good thing is, you know it will end. My worse non-labor pain was a slipped disc (L5) in my back. It was sitting on my sciatica nerve and I could not sit down, or bend at the waist. I had surgery later that year, b/c it became unbearable. I can sympathize w/ your back pain. I think back pain is really debilitating. Sending prayers your way for a quick recovery!

  6. Where to begin?!! I think falling a couple of times were the most painful. Those falls led to a world of pain.

  7. I know that most mothers would say child birth, and while that led me to believe I was seeing Jesus because epidurals don't work on me and the contractions and then pushing the shoulders out was like living death, I would still say that root canals are the worst. I apparently have veins that don't run right so the numbing meds don't work no matter how the periodontist rams my entire jaw full of it. So much so that my face swells to twice its normal size and gives me a black eye - one week before my wedding. Then the power in the building goes out and the periodontist leaves to watch his kids play, leaving me in the waiting room with the hot electricians trying to get the power back on. Then he returns and its the holding your mouth open with that metal thing and all that paper like you're being suffocated while they ram things in your mouth over and over, while you try to pretend that the pain meds finally worked so that it can all be over.

Fun. Stuff. I will take child birth. At least something good comes out of it.

Oh, and while I was pregnant the first time I had SERIOUS sciatic issues where I could barely walk and would literally measure every step I took, and most people probably thought I was some handicapped prego. It was lovely and absolute torture, so I have some idea what you're talking about. My mom had back pain her whole life stemming from a fall on the ice, and it was something that rarely let up. I'm sorry you're dealing with it and that it will be ongoing for you. Do you have your muscle relaxers and pain meds handy? I'm sure you do. What about a chiropractor?

  8. Poor you! Hope your back starts to co-operate soon :) Since I haven't experienced childbirth (I'm pretty sure that would be top of my list otherwise), my most painful thing was an ear infection I had a couple of years ago. I like to think I'm pretty tough but that one reduced me to tears more than once.

  9. I am sorry to hear of your pain, I cannot relate to your suffering. I have been experiencing lately, though a different kind of pain, a mental pain. I truly hope you will find a way to escape your suffering. Kisses.

  10. Hi Danielle,
I'm sorry you are experiencing so much pain. Much admiration to you for managing to write a posting.
I think the biggest pain was my now ex nagging me. Sorry, my biggest pain was when I broke my left leg when I was eight years old.
I hope you feel better real soon.
    In kindness, Gary

  12. I have rheumatoid arthritis, so pain is an every day thing for me. But...the worst pain I have ever experienced would have to be my migraines. Ugh.

  13. Ouch! Worst for me was the aftereffects of a myelogram gone bad. Six days hosting the mother of all migraines is something I never want to do again. And having had three back surgeries (including a spinal fusion) I can definitely relate to your back woes.

    Maybe congratulations will help?

You were selected as the winner of Linda Jackson's "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Here Comes the Bride" giveaway on my blog! (Hope the link works.) Shoot either Linda or me an email so we can get the book to you.

  14. Does acupuncture/acupressure help at all? Just a thought. The most pain I have been in aside from horrible bladder infections (ugh!) is probably when I severely sprained my ankle.
