Summer Is Still Holding On

Today is the first day of fall, but the weather here hasn’t gotten that memo.  The temperature got up to 90 degrees today.  We’re forecast to have high temperatures all week, and are even expected to break a few heat records this week.

There are definite signs that summer is still holding hold when you walk around the yard.

We have cherry tomatoes.  We didn’t plant cherry tomatoes this year.  Or last year.  We actually stopped planting them a few years ago because they take over everything.

The butterfly bush still has some blooms.

One of the azaleas on the shady side of the house has a few blooms.

The hydrangea bush still has a few blooms holding on.

The pink rose bush is blooming again.  It always has a few more blooms toward the end of September.

The rose bush we bought on clearance, half dead, a few years ago has more blooms.

The yellow rose bush has a few more blooms.

The roses all bloom early in the season, lose their blooms, and then bloom again in September.  It’s like they want to hold on to summer as long as they can before going dormant for winter.

I still have the summer flag up.  It seems a little too warm to change over to a fall flag yet.

I think the sky is the most beautiful blue in late summer and early fall.

There wasn’t a cloud in sight when I went to lunch today.  It was very tempting not to go back to work this afternoon.

I wouldn’t mind slightly cooler temperatures, but I’m happy summer is holding on for a little longer.

What about you?  Does it look and feel like fall where you are?  Or is summer still holding on?

  1. We're projected to have Santa Anas, so we're on the usual for this time of year. Still warm, but hope for cooler weather maybe soon.

  2. HOw cute you had cherry tomatoes and didn't plant them! Such pretty flowers you had! We had a bit unusual weather for the first day of fall. Severe thunderstorms (called here monsoons because of the amount of rain they dump quickly) and in areas about 20 miles from us even a tornado touched down! Never saw so much lightening as I did today! It did cool things down for a bit :)

  3. Yes, England has been turned upside down by this weather, too. At this time of year it is usually cold, with frost at night and a hint of snow. We have a forecast of 70 degrees stretching into October. It is frightening and I fear for people in already drought stricken regions.

  4. Summer is still holding on here. It's been in the 80's most days. Our butterfly bushes still bloom. We did not have a good tomato season this year. Possibly too much rain early on. I only get second blooms on my primroses.

  5. It’s only 12C here today and heavy rain. It has been warmer though, just not like your 90F. I doubt we had that all summer, Danielle. Enjoy it while it lasts.

  8. Hello Danielle, thanks for your recent visit to my blog and your comment. No, it definitely does not feel like fall here in NH. We have had temps in the mid 80s the past few days. I would rather be wearing sweatshirts than short sleeves!

  10. I wish it was holding on here. Our gardens are pretty well done apart from things like mums of a few hangers-on. It really looks lovely, those flowers! Hope they last a bit!

  12. Hi there Danielle, so nice to meet you and glad you stopped by to see me! I'm enjoying your blog and the pictures espcially the kitty pictures, I used to have a kitty that looked like Howard about 40 years ago, he was a sweetheart! I also rescue rose bushes and all kinds of flowers from the clearance areas, and with a little love and attention, they always recover and do great!

  13. Yikes, it looks like Summer didn't get the memo by your house! It's been warm here in the Northeast, too. But we have seen some leaves starting to change.
